Business Development resume: templates, keywords, and bullet examples

A strong business development resume leads every bullet with a sourced-revenue number: partnerships signed, pipeline generated, markets opened, and the dollars each produced. Separate the BD motion (partner sourcing, term sheets, channel design) from any sales motion explicitly, name your CRM, and let a conservative single-column template keep the numbers in front.

BD resumes get filtered for partnership and deal-sourcing signals — distinct from sales. Lead with sourced revenue, named partners, and structured deals.

How to angle a business development resume

The cleanest BD resume bullets surface (1) what type of deal (partnership, OEM, channel, licensing), (2) the named partner if disclosable, and (3) the revenue or strategic outcome.

If you've done both sales and BD, separate the two in the Skills section explicitly — "Sales motion: ICP definition, outbound, MEDDIC" vs "BD motion: partner sourcing, term-sheet structuring, channel design".

Section order: Summary → Experience → Skills → Education.

What recruiters and ATS screen for in a business development resume

Recruiters screening BD resumes look for evidence you create revenue motions that did not exist before: named partnership types (OEM, channel, licensing, co-marketing), deal economics, and the pipeline or revenue that resulted. ATS filters key on partnership vocabulary (strategic partnerships, channel, term sheets, GTM) plus the CRM. The instant filter-out is relationship language with no dollar attached; "built relationships with key partners" reads as activity, not outcome.

Common business development resume mistakes

The patterns that get business development resumes filtered out, and what to do instead.

Activity without economics. Every partner interaction on the resume should end in a number: revenue, pipeline, or signed terms.
Blurring BD and sales. If you have done both, split them explicitly; hiring managers are staffing one motion, not a blend.
Unnamed deal types. "Partnerships" is generic; OEM, channel, licensing, and co-sell are the words JDs filter on.
Burying market-entry wins. Opening a region or segment is the strongest BD signal there is; put it in your summary.
No sourcing story. BD is judged on what you originated. Make clear which deals you sourced versus inherited.

Business Development resume FAQ

What is the difference between business development and sales on a resume?

Sales closes within an existing motion (quota, ACV, win rate). BD creates new motions: partnerships, channels, and markets that did not exist before. On a resume, sales bullets prove attainment; BD bullets prove origination plus the revenue that followed.

What keywords do ATS filters use for business development roles?

Strategic partnerships, channel partnerships, pipeline generation, GTM strategy, term sheets, deal structuring, market expansion, and your CRM (Salesforce, HubSpot). BD titles vary widely between companies, so mirror the exact phrases in the job description.

How do I quantify business development work?

Attach economics to every motion: partnerships signed and their committed or realized revenue, pipeline sourced, share of new business influenced by channel, and time-to-first-revenue for markets you opened. Percentages and ranges work when exact figures are confidential.
